The Sony WF-1000XM4 was the winner of the best wireless earbuds overall award in our tested best wireless earbuds roundup. Here you can learn more about these superb earbuds and why we recommend them so strongly.

Out of the dozens of bestselling and popular wireless earbuds I rigorously tested for our Best Tested Wireless Earbuds roundup, I found that the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds were the Best Overall Wireless Earbuds. I chose these earbuds because they performed as well or better than the competition in almost all tests and when comparing their various features.

There’s a lot more to choosing the best earbuds than picking the one with the best overall sound quality. To be sure, sound quality is important. But the earbuds’ active noise cancellation (ANC), design, comfort, battery life, durability, support for spatial audio and other factors (like customization via a mobile app) are also super important.

You also need to consider how earbuds sound when listening to different types of audio. Ideally, they should also offer crystal-clear audio during phone calls, even outdoors on a windy day. And with the exception of spatial audio—Sony’s is far more limited than in some competitors—the WF-1000XM4 were exceptional as general purpose wireless earbuds. Read on for the full review.

A Compact, Elegant And Discreet Design

The WF-1000XM4s have one of the most compact and unobtrusive designs of the many earbuds I tested in the Best Tested Wireless Earbuds roundup. Because these earbuds lack a stem, very little sticks out of your ears, so it’s harder for people to see that you’re wearing them. They’re also one of the most lightweight pairs of earbuds I tried. After a few minutes, I barely noticed I was wearing them, even when audio was not playing. Despite the streamlined design, they fit snugly and stayed firmly in place while running and working out.

The WF-1000XM4s were also some of the easiest earbuds to customize among the ones I tested. While wearing the earbuds, I was able to manage the settings with the built in touch controls. The touch-sensitive area on each earbud is generous, so my fingers never had to fumble around looking for the right place to tap–even when I was simultaneously engaged in other activities, like working at my desk or walking my dog.
