Richard Cordray has been tapped by President Obama to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
President Obama’s selection of Richard Cordray to head a new federal consumer agency is winning accolades from many higher education groups, who say Cordray and the new agency may promote consumer education and help limit unscrupulous student loan practices.
Cordray will lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created by Congress in 2010 as a way to consolidate consumer protection and education programs scattered across seven federal agencies. The bureau’s creation was part of the “Dodd-Frank� financial reform legislation approved after the 2008 financial meltdown.
The selection of Cordray, a former attorney general of Ohio, is controversial because the president made the move as a “recess appointment,â€� a rare practice invoked when Congress is out of town. CES 2012: Consumer Electronics President Sees Sales Growth Spurring Jobs; Advocates Arbitration vs. Patent Lawsuits

Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro told International Business Times a projected $ 200 billion of electronics sales in the U.S. alone is a boon to U.S. companies, spurring employment and encouraging production to return from offshore.
Earlier on Sunday, the CEA projected global electronics sales this year should surpass $ 1 trillion for the first time. The national trade group representing U.S. electronics makers is opening is annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday.
